The BR XO2 Tendon Boot is a tendon boot for the front legs with a ventilated plastic shell from a mould developed by BR and a thermally shaped Air Liner lining. It closes with lightly elastic straps with a hook-and-eye fastening. Meant for riders who train or jump daily and want a boot that stays light and lets air through.
About these tendon boots
With the XO2, BR started from two things riders dislike about leg protection: boots that turn warm and damp under the shell, and boots that end up sitting too tightly around the leg. The answer is a shell BR had made in its own mould, to the anatomy of the horse's leg, and a lining that pushes air out with every knock.
The shell. It is anatomically shaped and covers the leg only where BR thinks a shell is needed. Behind the fetlock and at the sides of it, it is subtly thicker; elsewhere material has been left out. The result, according to BR, is a boot that weighs around ten per cent less than an average tendon boot. The shell is hard enough to take a knock, but stays flexible, so it shapes itself around the leg instead of standing away from it. There are ventilation holes in the shell.
The lining. The Air Liner is a thermally shaped lining with air chambers in the material. On a knock, the air is forced out of those chambers through the lining and out via the ventilation holes; that is the damping effect. At the same time, heat and moisture building up under the shell can leave by the same route. BR gives the composition as 100% polyurethane for the outside and 100% polychloroprene, that is, neoprene, as the second material.
The fastening. No hook-and-loop: the straps are lightly elastic and work with a hook-and-eye fastening. That means you set the boot to the same position every time, and the straps follow the curve of the shell without sticking out. How many fastenings there are per boot, BR does not state. We stock this boot in black, navy, white, Crimson and brown, in sizes Full and Cob. Not every colour comes in both sizes.
What it is not. A closed shell holds more heat than an open bandage, ventilation holes or not, and it is not meant for a horse whose legs ought to be wrapped. A tendon boot belongs on the front legs; for the hind legs you use fetlock boots. In the international dressage competition arena, boots are not permitted, so there they come off before you enter the space around the arena. About use at competitions BR itself says nothing for this model.
