This Sprenger Bow Balance is the 120 mm version, at Sprenger the standard size for adult riders. It is a jointed stirrup in stainless steel with a curved arch and an extra-wide tread, meant for dressage, showjumping, eventing and hacking. The System 4 joint in the side branches moves with your foot instead of holding your foot in one position.
About this stirrup
Why 120 mm. Sprenger calls 110 mm the children's size and 120 mm the standard size. 120 mm is therefore the width that works out for most adult riding boots. The width you choose is the free space between the two side branches; on this model the tread itself is also made extra wide, which spreads the pressure over a larger part of the sole of your foot.
The curved arch. The branches of the Bow Balance run curved instead of straight. Your leg therefore sits closer to the horse and you keep the horse between your legs more easily. A second result of that shape: a stirrup you lose hangs in a way that makes it easier to find again with your foot. Left and right are not identical, which is why each stirrup is marked with an L or an R.
The System 4 joint. Between the arch and the tread there is a movable link on both sides. It lets your foot make its natural, springing movement and absorbs part of that movement instead of passing it on to a fixed piece of steel. Because the sides can give, a deeply lowered heel feels less stiff. If a rider falls, the joint gives way as well and the foot can leave the stirrup faster than with a stirrup that is completely rigid. That describes what the mechanism does; it is no guarantee, and a well-fitting boot and a correct stirrup width matter just as much.
Tread and pad. The wide tread holds a pad of solid rubber in two different hardnesses, with a nub pattern. That combination holds your boot sole, also when it is wet or sandy. The pad is a wear part and can be replaced separately per stirrup width: worn nubs cost you no new stirrups.
Material and limits. The stirrup is made of stainless steel and produced in Germany, at Herm. Sprenger in Iserlohn. It was developed together with Matthias Bierotte. Sprenger gives no weight; stainless steel does weigh more than aluminium. And this is a jointed stirrup, not a safety stirrup: the outer branch stays closed and no standard or official testing is stated for it.
