The Fillis is the classic stirrup model: a closed arch in stainless steel with a flat tread and a rubber pad you can replace. Sprenger makes it in a plain line without a joint, which appeals above all to dressage riders. With us you will find it in a silver and a rose gold finish, and in three tread widths.
About this stirrup
A Fillis stirrup is as simple as a stirrup gets: two closed branches, a flat tread and an eye for the stirrup leather. Fewer parts also means less that can wear out or jam. There is no joint, no shock-absorbing element and no safety mechanism. So you get the classic stirrup feel, with a tread that is not made extra wide.
Material and finish. The stirrups are made of stainless steel, so they do not rust and stay clean with water. You choose between a silver and a rose gold finish. The rose gold version stands out more in the arena; the silver stays neutral and goes with any bridle and any saddle. In both cases there is a black rubber pad in the tread.
The rubber pad. That pad gives grip under your boot sole and it is interchangeable. That is handier than it sounds: the pad wears out fastest of the whole stirrup, and instead of buying new stirrups you simply swap the rubber. Once the pattern is smooth or the rubber has hardened, that is the moment to replace it. Keep the width of your stirrup in mind, because the pad is size-bound.
Sizes and who they are for. The width you choose is the free space between the branches. Sprenger treats 110 mm as the children's size, 120 mm as the standard size and 130 mm as the size for large shoe sizes. Not every finish exists in every size: rose gold comes in 11 cm and 12 cm, silver in 12 cm and 13 cm. So pick your size first and then look at which finish you can get in that size.
What you should know about the limits. A Fillis is a fixed stirrup. If you ride with short stirrup leathers, or want the sides to give with your ankle, this model does not do that. It also has no open outer side that releases the foot. Sprenger gives no weight for the Fillis and states no standard and no official testing; what is established is the material, the finish and the size.
